Community Technology Development Organisation (formerly Community Technology Development Trust) and Oxfam Zimbabwe will be jointly co-hosting a Global Workshop for the Sowing Diversity=Harvesting Security (SD=HS) programme at Cresta Lodge in Harare from 26th to 30th March 2018.  SD=HS is a Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) funded project being implemented by Oxfam Novib and partner organisations. The workshop will be attended by over 40 participants from Africa (Malawi, Uganda, Zambia), Asia (Laos, Vietnam, Nepal, Cambodia and China), Latin America (Peru and Guatemala) and Europe (Sweden, Spain and Netherlands).

The objectives of the workshop are:

  1. To support the development of resilient indigenous and farming communities that are able to access and sustainably use plant genetic resources for food and nutrition security, climate change adaptation and disaster management.
  2. To enhance the livelihoods and seed security of indigenous peoples and smallholder farmers by improving market access to high-quality seeds of diverse crops and varieties adapted to farmers’ needs and preferences.
  3. To strengthen the coping strategies of the rural poor, especially women and youth during the hunger period through improved utilization of neglected or underutilized species.

The workshop is focused on developing phase 2 of the SD=HS programme with the following priority areas:

  • Expanding and mainstreaming Farmer Field Schools to new countries and regions and create conditions for up scaling.
  • Empower farmers and foster their collaboration with public institutions.
  • Enable adaptation to climate change and management of disaster risk.
  • Increase exchange of knowledge between communities and private/public actors.
  • Strengthen community seed banks.
